I recently experienced Janet Stone’s online Bhakti course, Chanting: Yoga of the Heart, as a way to connect in community during COVID. Weekly recorded dharma talks and discussions about devotion, chanting, and self-expression are part of over six weeks of self-paced guided study and practice.
Chanting with Janet Stone, Girish and other guest teachers, I learned that I love singing with the droning of the harmonium. The mantras are sung in Sanskrit. Sanskrit feels like the primeval mother tongue at the root of communication. When I’m chanting, the borderlines of my body soften and disappear.
Chanting throughout this course has empowered me with skills and insights to step courageously into places that challenge me. I’ve gained a better grasp of the heart of yoga and I now live from a sense of devotion and express that as a lived embodied experience in the world.
I appreciated studying the seven module course at my own pace, I explored: Mantra and meaning; Leading chanting; Ancient mythology; Loving devotion; Self-expression through sound and voice; Intention and sound. I’ve been able to go deeper and integrate the philosophy of yoga into my daily life and practice.
