    Pilates and yoga have become two of the most popular forms of exercise in North America. So much so, that many studios have started offering both, at times even combining the two into a class called yogalates!

    At first glance, the two practices may appear as one and the same. While they do carry many similarities, there are several key differences.

    What is the Difference Between Pilates and Yoga?

    Pilates and yoga are both low-impact forms of exercise that offer a wide range of physical benefits including increased strength and flexibility.     Origins of Yoga & Pilates

    One of the key differences between yoga and pilates is their origin stories. The roots of yoga can be traced back to Northern India’s Indus-Sarasvati civilization over 5000 years ago. The practice of yoga includes practicing the physical asanas, but also breathwork and meditation techniques designed to promote mental and physical well-being.     Pilates, on the other hand, is a significantly more modern creation, starting in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates. He designed the method with the original goal of helping World War 1 veterans to rehabilitate their injuries. The primary goal of pilates is to develop muscular awareness and build strength (especially of the core) through stabilization and slow precise movements.
