  • Are You Ready for a Yoga Teacher Training?

    July 08, 2022 4 min read

Most of us who have been lucky enough to experience the life-changing benefits of yoga are eager to share our lessons with others. Sometimes this comes in the form of simple advice on how someone can improve their posture. Other times, we do our best to drag friends and family to their first yoga class. If you find yourself constantly sharing the wisdom of yoga with everyone around you, maybe it’s time to consider signing up to a yoga teacher training.

If this idea tickles your fancy and you're not sure you’re ready for the commitment, scroll down to read about everything you should take into account before embarking on your journey.

Questions to ask yourself before enrolling in a yoga teacher training

Starting the search for the right teacher training is daunting and time consuming. It may be so overwhelming that you may not even know where to start. However, asking yourself some key questions will help you reflect on your goals, motivations and interests. Grab a notebook and write down the answers to the following questions.

    • How much time can you, realistically, devote to a program? Include study and practice time.
    • Are you able to cover any additional expenses like retreats, gear or studying material?
    • Do you need a flexible program that could account for unexpected commitments (work or family obligations)?
    • Do you want to study locally or join a training program abroad?
    • What are your goals after finishing the yoga teacher training?
    • Do you want to deepen your practice, develop a home practice, teach in studios or gyms, or open your own yoga business?
    • Do you want to delve into spiritual, healing or therapeutic practices?
    • Do you have a regular meditation practice?
    • How interested are you in yoga philosophy?
    • Are you drawn to yoga for specific purposes, i.e., yoga for children, elderly, pre/postnatal, trauma healing, yoga for athletes, etc.?
    • Would you like to combine yoga with other activities, i.e., fitness classes, water sports?
    • Would you be able to commit to continuing education, i.e., workshops, retreats, independent studying and advanced teacher trainings?
    • Last but not least, what’s your budget?

Don’t underestimate the importance of answering these questions to the best of your ability. Your responses will greatly narrow down your options and help you find the type of program that will strike a chord with you. This is essential. If you don’t love your practice and the material you’re given, it will be extremely difficult to reap all the benefits from your program.

How to choose a yoga teacher training program

How do you feel after the previous reflection exercise? If you’re pumped and ready to take the next step, congratulations! It’s time to look for a 200-hour teacher training and a subsequent 300-hour or 500-hour training. A 200-hour training is the essential qualification anyone aspiring to become a yoga teacher should get.

In my case, I was lucky enough to find a two-year 600-hour program in Mexico City. While this option is not the most common, I chose it because I wanted to study locally, slowly and surely. Asking myself the above questions helped me reach that conclusion!

If, however, you’re doubtful about any aspect of what it takes to become a yoga teacher, refer to the books below to get more insight into the lives and work of actual yoga teachers.
