    Intro to King Pigeon

    Posted on - June 15th, 2024 - Victoria Maybee - Yoga

King Pigeon Pose, also known as Rajakapotasana in Sanskrit, is an advanced yoga asana that combines elements of backbending, hip opening, and balance. Named after the graceful stance of a pigeon, this pose offers a deep stretch for the hip flexors, quadriceps, chest, shoulders, and spine, making it an excellent posture for releasing tension and promoting flexibility.

Elements of the King Pigeon Pose

Begin in a tabletop position, aligning wrists beneath shoulders and knees beneath hips.

Slide the right knee forward towards the right wrist and place the right foot near the left hip, angling the shin slightly outwards.

Extend the left leg back behind you, keeping the thigh and knee parallel to the mat.

Inhale as you lengthen the spine, then exhale to gently lower the torso towards the mat, resting forearms or forehead on the ground if accessible.

Reach the left hand back to grasp the left foot or ankle, drawing it towards the body as you lift the chest and gaze upwards.
